Businesses that build, renovate, install and maintain. From roofer to plumber.
We follow the classification of Statistics Netherlands (CBS): SBI 2025, section F, divisions 41 to 43.
We have covered two trades in detail: roofers and roof builders, and plumbers and installers. Do you work in another part of construction? Much of what is here applies to you too.
Where things go wrong in construction
Do you recognise one of these situations? Then your accounting needs attention.
-
Reverse-charging VAT or charging it
If you work for a contractor, you often reverse-charge the VAT. For a private customer or an owners' association (VvE), never. If you reverse-charge wrongly, the tax authorities claim the VAT from you.
-
Chain liability
A contractor can be liable for the payroll tax of his subcontractors. If you have staff, he therefore asks for a G account.
-
Freelancers below the threshold
From 31 December 2026, the law presumes employment at around €38 an hour or less. That also applies to freelancers you hire yourself.
With your accounting in order, you know per client what you charge, what you pay over and what you set aside.
The job adds up, and so does the business
The job
Is the price right per job?

The business
Can you carry the growth?

Frequently asked questions
For construction and installation businesses that are growing, with 2 to 15 people. Roofers and plumbers have their own page. For other construction businesses, we work the same way.
When you work for a contractor who has taken on the job from a customer. On the invoice, you put "VAT reverse-charged" and the contractor's VAT number. If you work directly for a private customer or an owners' association (VvE), you charge VAT yourself.
A contractor can be liable for the payroll tax that his subcontractor does not pay. That is why he asks a subcontractor with staff for a G account. A freelancer without staff does not get a G account, even if the contractor asks for one.
That is when the legal presumption of employment starts. If a freelancer works for a business for around €38 an hour or less, excluding VAT and materials, the law presumes employment. The client must then prove otherwise. The minister has yet to announce the exact amount (as of October 2026).
Since 1 January 2024, as a contractor you are liable for defects the customer did not see at handover, unless they are not down to you. That also applies to renovation. With a building, a customer can bring a claim up to 20 years after handover. So keep a good file for each job.
