Businesses that sell, service and repair cars. From used car dealer to garage.
We follow the classification of Statistics Netherlands (CBS): SBI 2025, with 47810 for retail sale of motor vehicles and 95311 for general repair and maintenance of motor vehicles. On our site, we use shorter names.
We have covered two parts in detail: car dealing and used cars, and garages and car repair. Many automotive businesses do both. Then what is on both pages applies.
Where things go wrong in the automotive sector
Do you recognise one of these situations? Then your accounting needs attention.
-
Paperwork per car
Under the margin scheme, you show per car who you bought from and for how much. If a signed purchase statement is missing, you cannot prove the margin.
-
An hourly rate that doesn't add up
A workshop has high fixed costs. Work out your rate on the hours you really invoice, not on the hours you are on the premises.
-
Cash
If you sell cars or parts, since 1 January 2026 you may not accept or pay €3,000 or more in cash. Not in instalments either.
With your accounting in order, you know per car and per work order what you earn, what you pay over and what you set aside.
The trading adds up, and so does the workshop
The trading
Is the margin right per car?
Purchase statement, costs and sale are kept together per car, under the margin scheme or with VAT.
The workshop
Does the hour pay for the workshop?
Hourly rate, parts and extra work match up with the work order and the invoice.

Frequently asked questions
For automotive businesses that are growing, with 1 to 15 people. Car dealing and used cars, and garages and car repair have their own page. For other automotive businesses, such as a tyre service or a bodywork repairer, we work the same way.
Usually 47810 for selling cars to consumers, 46710 if you mainly sell to dealers, and 95311 for general repair and maintenance (SBI 2025). The KVK assigns the code based on your description. Does your insurance policy or your bank still show 45112? That is the old classification (SBI 2008).
The cao Motorvoertuigenbedrijf en Tweewielerbedrijf. It has been declared generally binding, until around 16 September 2027. It applies to garages and also to businesses that sell cars to the public. Employees in the garage must build up a pension with PMT. We find out what applies to your business (as of October 2026).
Not for €3,000 or more. Since 1 January 2026, a dealer in goods, such as a car dealer, may not accept or pay such an amount in cash, not even in instalments. If you sell parts as a garage, don't accept €3,000 or more in cash for a large repair either. Ask for a card payment or a payment request.
Set aside 25% of your profit, not 25% of every payment. For a car dealer, the latter is more than the entire margin. You set the VAT aside on top of that: for a margin scheme car 21/121 of the margin, for a repair the VAT shown on the invoice.
We mainly work for businesses that are growing. Have you just started? Then the Vakwerk guides are a good start: Nº 03 for the used car dealer and Nº 04 for the garage. You buy them as a PDF in our web shop, for €149 excl. VAT per guide.
