Your first employed painter: what does an hour really cost?

If you take on a painter as an employee, the SAVG collective agreement applies. It is generally binding up to and including 17 August 2028, even if you are not a member of OnderhoudNL. An all-round painter is in pay group 5 at €24.05 per hour. With holiday pay, pension, USAG and days off, an hour on the job costs €33.91 in the worked example, before employer insurance contributions.

How do you calculate your hourly rate as a painter?

Your hourly rate starts with what you want to take home and with the hours clients actually pay for, in summer and in winter. In the worked example a starting painter arrives at €70.29 per hour excluding VAT. The €35 to €50 on price comparison sites is a picture of the market, not a cost price.

Lead and asbestos in old homes: what must a painter know and when do you stop?

Old paint layers can contain lead. White lead has been banned indoors since 1939, red lead since 1990, and outdoors white lead was used until 2009. Since 9 April 2026 a limit of 0.03 mg of lead per m³ of air applies, also to the self-employed. Sealant and putty in buildings from before 1994 can contain asbestos. There the customer arranges a survey, and the licence requirement is expected in March 2027.

Do you work as a self-employed painter for a painting company? This is what changes after 31 December 2026

On 31 December 2026 the presumption of employment takes effect. If you work as a self-employed painter for a painting company at € 38 an hour or less (as of 1 January 2026, without VAT and without paint), that company must prove in court that you are not an employee. It does not apply with private customers. From 2027 the tax authority can again impose default penalties.

Mandatory pension with BPF Schilders as a self-employed painter: who is covered and what does it cost in 2026?

A self-employed painter with a sole proprietorship or partnership must participate in BPF Schilders, even without staff. That is in the 2015 mandatory participation decree and the Hague Court of Appeal confirmed it in 2020. In 2026 the premium at the lowest chosen pension salary is € 174.42 every four weeks, 13 times a year. The premium is deductible as business costs.

Reverse charging VAT as a subcontracted painter: how do 9% and 21% work?

If you paint as a subcontractor for a contractor or another painting firm, you reverse charge the VAT. The 9% rate for homes older than two years still applies, also in the chain. On the invoice you show the amount per rate, with "VAT reverse charged" and the contractor's VAT number. If you do more than half of the work in your own workshop, you do not reverse charge.
